Embracing the Ice: My Journey as a Hockey Parent

In 2023, I embarked on an unforgettable adventure with my son as he laced up his skates for his first year of hockey. The excitement was palpable, but so were the nerves. My son had mastered the basics of skating, but this was a whole new world of competition and teamwork. Luckily, his friend's dad took on the role of coach, guiding him through the ropes and making the transition smoother. Having his best friend Bennett on the same team was the icing on the cake.

Becoming Part of the Team

As I delved deeper into the world of hockey, I discovered that each team needed a trained and qualified person to handle injuries. This led me on a journey of taking numerous courses, eventually becoming the 'Crew Trainer' for my son's team. Every game, I held my breath, hoping no one would get hurt on the ice. It was a nerve-wracking experience, but it also taught me the importance of safety and preparedness in sports.

The Power of Good Sportsmanship

Fast forward to 2024, and my son was back on the ice with another fantastic coach—yet another friend's dad, proving how fortunate we were. As I continued in my role as Crew Trainer, I realized that hockey, despite its competitive nature, is a sport that thrives on teamwork and sportsmanship. Instilling these values in young players not only makes the game more enjoyable but also provides them with valuable life lessons.

The Birth of The Ice Code

My experiences as bench staff inspired me to create The Ice Code, a guide aimed at promoting good sportsmanship and teamwork in hockey. In a sport that can sometimes be aggressive and competitive, The Ice Code reminds us that the true spirit of hockey lies in camaraderie, respect, and fair play. It's about ensuring that every player has the opportunity to learn, grow, and enjoy the game. Whether you're a seasoned hockey parent or just starting your journey, The Ice Code is a must-read for anyone who believes in the transformative power of sports.

So, if you're ready to embrace the ice and all its wonders, join me on this journey. Let's make hockey a positive and enriching experience for our children, and for ourselves.
